Fred Hand Sr. political papers, 1947-1958.

The series consists of political papers of Fred Hand from 1947-1958. The papers include clippings, correspondence, legislative records (mainly appointment files), publicity materials, and transcripts of Hand's speeches and radio or television appearances. The bulk (1953-1954) of the materials pertain to the 1953 and 1954 legislative sessions in the Georgia House and Hand's 1954 gubernatorial campaign. Of particular interest are materials documenting Hand's opposition to the 1954 Brown Supreme Court decision on the desegregation of public schools and Hand's records as chairman of the Georgia School Building Authority. The series also contains some correspondence and clippings dealing with the 1947 Georgia gubernatorial controversy.
